Timothée Chalamet and All the Other Celebrities at the 2023 Game Awards

There were a lot of celebrities at 2023’s Game Awards —between the famous faces on stage and in the many, many game trailers, promotional material actually got more show time than the award winners themselves.

That’s caused no shortage of controversy on social media, as few other awards shows give more airtime to promotional material than the honors themselves. Show organizer Geoff Keighley has made clear he wants to legitimize the awards presentation as “gaming’s Oscars,” and hosting recognizable actors brings in a mainstream audience. But some fans say it could also alienate viewers who only care about the games.

Whether you’re a celeb stan or only tune in for the trailers, here are all the famous faces who might have caught your eye at The Game Awards 2023.

Matthew McConaughey Is Going Back to Space

Matthew McConaughey took the stage early into The Game Awards to promote Exodus, an upcoming game in which he stars as a space explorer who has been separated from his loved ones by distance and time dilation. Sound familiar, Interstellar fans?

Gonzo the Great Presents Best Debut Indie Game

The Muppets are regular presenters at The Game Awards. This year Gonzo the Great showed up to help present the Best Debut Indie Game, and to tell host Geoff Keighley how much he and Camilla the Chicken love playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Jordan Peele Is Working With Hideo Kojima on a New Game

Nope and Us director Jordan Peele took the stage halfway through an interview with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima to confirm that he will be working with the famously idiosyncratic game developer with him on his next project, OD. Kojima’s last game, Death Stranding, tapped other Hollywood talent including Norman Reedus and Guillermo del Toro.

Anthony Mackie Presents Best Ongoing Game

Marvel’s new Captain America showed his leadership chops by working the crowd at The Game Awards, encouraging them to up the energy before presenting the award for Best Ongoing Game.

Walter Goggins and the Fallout Crew Show Up With a Full Brotherhood of Steel Cosplay

Cast members from Amazon’s upcoming Fallout TV series showed off a trailer for the show during the night’s events, after which they presented the Best Adaptation award (which honored television shows and movies based on video games). The biggest standout was a cast member in full cosplay as a member of Fallout‘s Brotherhood of Steel.

Simu Liu Busted His Leg

Anthony Mackie’s fellow Marvel star Simu Liu showed up on stage with a cast on his leg. No, he didn’t get it doing stunts — he said his leg got hurt during a game of pick-up basketball. He’ll be voice acting soon in a game inspired by Warcraft and Starcraft.

Timothée Chalamet Presents Game of the Year

Paul Atreides himself made a brief but impactful presentation to present the night’s Game of the Year award, where host Geoff Keighley poked fun at him by introducing him by his old YouTube handle, ModdedController360.
