I’m A Celebrity, day 10 review: It’s baffling why this tedious series has sidelined Nigel Farage

Ratings plummeting. Campmates quitting. Now high-profile allegations of animal cruelty. It hasn’t been a vintage week for I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here! (ITV1) so why the jungle reality contest continues to sideline its star signing becomes more baffling by the day.

Nigel Farage has been stuck on the periphery, barely seen or heard. There’s little point in shelling out a record £1.5m fee for a lightning rod figure if you’re not going to let sparks fly. Pretty much the only camera time Farage gets is while he’s bathing. Rarely can a politician have been so squeaky clean.

The man himself has repeatedly mentioned that he’s keen to do Bushtucker Trials because they make up “25 per cent of the screen time”. His cunning self-publicity plan has been thwarted. Perhaps by not voting for him to face trials, much to his ongoing surprise, Farage’s detractors are hoping he’ll go away. They might be disappointed. He’s currently bookmakers’ fourth favourite to win, tipped to go all the way to the final.

Instead it was Farage’s blander campmates who hogged the limelight once more. Puppyish irritant Sam Thompson, nice-but-dull Marvin Humes and cult hero boxer Tony Bellew stayed overnight at “The Misery Motel” (hot and cold running rats, en suite cockroach showers).
