The Met Gala is the most exclusive red carpet invite of the calendar year for celebrities.
But even fashion’s night of nights has some strict rules in place for its famous attendees.
Over the years, some of the absolute no-nos for the fundraising gala have come to light with everything from social media bans to bizarre dietary restrictions.

But for the upcoming 2024 Met Gala, there’s already one slight rule change.
Read on to find out all the Met Gala rules and the sneaky way celebs have found a way around one of them.
You (usually) can’t touch the art
It’s pretty self explanatory that when you go to an at exhibit, you don’t touch the art.
Each year the Met Gala marks a new themed exhibition for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. This year’s theme is Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.
While the guests still won’t be able to touch the pieces themselves, the curators have found a way around the rule so celebrities can experience the feel of the garments.
“It’s one of the difficulties of museums, that you can’t touch things,” the curator Andrew Bolton said, revealing they’ll be using wallpaper to replicate textures using 3D scanning.
“The whole room will be covered with this wallpaper,” he explained.
“You can use your hands to feel the shapes and the complexity of the embroidery.”

No phones allowed
There’s a reason we don’t know much about what happens inside the Met Gala and that’s thanks to the no-phones rule.
Phones were officially banned by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour in 2015.
Official pics of the celebrities in their fabulous looks are taken on the red carpet. But once inside, the phones must be off.
“In short: It’s a secret. For this reason, guests must abide by the no phone (and therefore, no social media) policy,” Vogue confirms.

The only photos we see from the dinner portion of the night come from professional photographers.
However, the stars have found one way over the years to still keep the evening a ‘secret’ while getting a snap from inside the museum.
Many stars have posted mirror selfies and photos from the MET bathroom, including the likes of Kylie Jenner, Reese Witherspoon and Dakota Johnson amongst others.

Smoking is prohibited
It’s no surprise smoking is banned at the Met Gala given the New York State laws prohibit it in enclosed spaces.
That hasn’t stopped celebrities over the years posting photos of them smoking in the museum bathroom.
You have to be 18 to attend
Looks like the child stars will have to sit this one out.
While there was never an age restriction since the first Met Gala in 1948, this reportedly changed in 2018 for the Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination theme.

Dance Moms star Maddie Ziegler, who was 15 at the time, told The Hollywood Reporter she wouldn’t be attending “because I’m not old enough!”
This rule also means the star can’t bring their under 18-year-old kids to the Met Gala.
Some foods are reportedly banned
Last but not least, there are some foods that are a big no-no thanks to Anna Wintour.
According to The New York Post, a former Vogue employer spilled that parsley, onion and garlic are all banned ingredients for the dinner.
The vegetables are reportedly a no go to avoid getting traces stuck in your teeth or a case of bad breath.
Meanwhile any appetisers like bruschetta that are a bit precarious to handle are apparently avoided as the pose a risk of spilling on the guest’s glamorous outfits.
