Golden Globes host Jo Koy’s encounter with Taylor Swift was not made of wildest dreams.
The comedian, 52, got a death stare from the pop star that set the internet aflame, after he made a joke about the NFL’s embrace of Swift, following her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce.
Reflecting on the now viral moment after the show, Koy told ET, “Maybe she was thirsty? Maybe she just needed to drink the champagne.”
During the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday night, Koy made a joke about the NFL’s outsized interest in Swift when she attends Kelce’s games.
He said, “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL is that at the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.”
The broadcast cut to Swift sitting at a table and shooting the comedian a glare while sipping a drink.
Fans online pounced on the exchange.
“Congrats you pissed off the most intense fandom. Enjoy your snakes,” one fan commented on Koy’s Instagram account.
Another fan wrote on the same Instagram post: “Unnecessary rude joke about TS. JUST not nice! Being a host doesn’t mean insulting people. It’s not a roast. There are classy ways to go about things.”
“Absolute deadly glare from Taylor Swift at Jo Koy’s football joke was all of us right now,” another fan posted on X, formerly Twitter.
One fan commented, “That joke wasn’t even horrible! But she just ended this guy’s career with one glare. ‘OH you’re the guy Taylor Swift glared at on national television!’”
Another fan added, “That Taylor Swift death glare was the nail in the coffin,” referring to the general consensus that Koy bombed.
Swift was at the Golden Globes without Kelce, who was miles away playing against the L.A. Chargers. She was there because she was nominated for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures concert doc “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.” She lost, and the box office smash “Barbie” won.
Swift has previously talked about the public reaction to the NFL’s coverage of her at Kelce’s games.
In her profile for Time’s Person of the Year, she said, “I’m just there to support Travis. I have no awareness of if I’m being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads, and Chads.”
Koy elaborated to ET on Sunday, “Aww, man, it was cute. I was just saying it was cute,” he said, referring to the NFL camera often panning to Swift at Kelce’s games.
“I was just saying it’s less cutaways, that’s all.”
