These Celebrity Halloween Costumes Are the Most Genius Throwback Moments

Nostalgia has been the name of the game for a while now, and there is perhaps no category that better exemplifies this trend than the celebrity Halloween costume. It makes sense: what better way to tap into our collective love of ’90s supermodels, early aughts rom-coms, and canonical thrillers than with a little game of dress-up? Given that most of us don loungewear roughly 364 days of the year, and Halloween is one of the few occasions that demands a little more pizzazz, we are very much here for it.

As has been well-documented, Heidi Klum has been the queen of Halloween for quite a few years now. But she’s not the only famous face to slip on a mask come spooky season. Ahead, see the best, most nostalgic celebrity Halloween costumes this year, some of which just might inspire a walk down memory lane.

Bond Girl

Halle Bailey revived an iconic early aughts look for a twinning moment with Halle Berry, who wore basically the exact same outfit for her role in the James Bond thriller Die Another Day. An orange bikini, white belt, and short pixie cut were all it took to take us straight back to 2002.

Playboy Bunny

Though the Playboy Mansion has long since passed its heyday, Nicola Peltz Beckham brought it back—in spirit, at least—with her Playboy Bunny costume. The model went with a classic black satin bunny costume complete with a bow tie, black tights, and black satin ears.

13 Going on 30

Jennifer Garner gave the world a sweet dose of Y2K nostalgia when she revealed her 13 Going on 30 costume on TikTok. The actress starred in the film back in 2004 and, 20 years later, fans still worship that iconic Versace dress (which, by the way, has apparently gone missing).

Barbarella

Taking it all the way back to 1968, Kylie Jenner transformed into Barbarella this year, a glamorous space adventurer played by the one and only Jane Fonda. Of course, Jenner is no stranger to creative costumes: in years past, she’s dressed up as the Bride of Frankenstein, Christina Aguilera, Barbie, and Madonna, to name a few.

Alice in Wonderland

Selena Gomez teamed up with beau Benny Blanco for a couples costume straight out of Wonderland, quite literally. While Gomez dressed up as Alice from Alice in Wonderland, Blanco served as her spooky Mad Hatter, complete with a full face of clown makeup and a mismatched suit.

The Matrix

Sophie Turner donned full-body latex to pull off her Matrix-inspired costume, where she transformed into Trinity from the 1999 sci-fi film. She paired the skin-tight black romper with some teeny-tiny sunglasses, a long black coat, and knee-high boots.

’90s Naomi

Is there a more iconic supermodel than Naomi Campbell? To transform into the queen of the ’90s runway, Ciara replicated one of Campbell’s most legendary looks: a leopard-print onesie topped with a black beret. The original look debuted in 1991 at late designer Azzedine Alaïa’s fall/winter ready-to-wear fashion show.

Whitney Houston

Jennifer Hudson stepped out for the Halloween-themed episode of her talk show as one of Hollywood’s most legendary performers: Whitney Houston. The look was a replica of Houston’s outfit for the 1992 film The Bodyguard, which she starred in alongside Kevin Costner.

Lady Marmalade

In true diva fashion, Christina Aguilera did a throwback of one her own looks—namely, the one from her 2001 music video for the song “Lady Marmalade.” She achieved the exaggerated Y2K aesthetic with big, blown-out blonde curls, costume-y eye makeup, and a leopard-print gown with a thigh-high slit.

Starfire Thee Stallion

Starfire has been a legend of the DC Universe since 1980, so it was high time someone tried their hand at perfecting the character’s Halloween costume. Enter Megan Thee Stallion, who put her own spin on the super-hero look with big red hair, a barely-there silver jumpsuit, and the perfect Instagram caption: Starfire Thee Stallion.
