Liam’s tragic death occurred at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, where he fell from the third floor.
Per local outlets La Nacion and Clarin, the hotel’s chief receptionist called 911 after becoming worried about Liam’s behavior leading up to his death.
According to a translated La Nacion transcript of the call, the worker said the artist was intoxicated and presumed he was “under the influence of alcohol and drugs,” insisting that someone needed to come “urgently” to the location. The outlet stated the call was made at 5:01 p.m. local time, shortly before Liam’s death around 10 minutes later.
Liam had been in Argentina since early October, when he attended the Oct. 2 concert of his former One Direction bandmate, Niall Horan, at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy.
The English musician was a member of popular boy band One Direction since its inception in 2010 on X-Factor UK. Consisting of himself, Louis Tomlinson, Harry, Zayn Malik and Niall, One Direction quickly became one of the most successful bands of all time, leading them to release four albums and embarked on several world tours.
Zayn left the band in March 2015, and the boys dropped their final album as four members a few months later, until announcing their indefinite hiatus in 2016. All of bandmates went on to pursue successful solo careers, including Liam, who released his hit debut single, “Strip That Down,” in 2017.
Fans were unsure where Liam and the rest of his bandmates stood following his “Impaulsive” podcast episode in 2022. At the time, Liam slammed Zayn, noting the “many reasons” why he didn’t like the “Pillowtalk” singer. He also threw shade at the remaining band members.
However, more than a year later, Liam reflected on his comments and apologized.
“One of the biggest remarks I made was about the One Direction thing … and a lot of self-protection, I suppose, in that moment, more than anything,” he shared in the July 2023 YouTube video. “The rest of the boys really stuck by me when I needed them most, they kinda came to the rescue. Even Zayn, as well, which is why I did send him a little thank you online. It came across really big-headed didn’t it?”
