Autumn leaves are falling down like plans into place!
Fall is upon us, which means it’s time to bring out the scarves, sweaters and seasonal beverages. As the weather cools, these are the best months to spend quality time with loved ones, both indoors and outdoors. Take some inspiration from celebrity parents like Kylie Jenner, Keke Palmer and Priyanka Chopra when brainstorming a day that will fuel happiness for the entire family.
Pumpkin Patch Photos
For pretty much everyone with kids under the age of 10, it’s an annual tradition to visit your local pumpkin patch, where in addition to the requisite flannel-clad photo ops,; there are often treats, rides and petting zoos available.
Last fall, celebs including Kylie Jenner, Nick Cannon and Patrick and Brittany Mahomes took their children to pumpkin patches and shared snaps of their adventures. During Jenner’s visit with son Aire and daughter Stormi, she posted pictures to her Instagram Stories that included Aire enjoying a tractor ride.
Want to take it to the next level? Opt for matching outfits! Cannon brought five of his kids, Golden, Powerful, Rise, Monroe and Morocco, to the pumpkin patch at night in coordinating orange onesies.
Sip on a Warm Drink
The colder the weather, the warmer your drink should be! In a sweet Instagram post around the holidays last year, country star Thomas Rhett and his wife Lauren Akins snuggled up with two of their children on the sofa with a cup of hot chocolate.
“What are we doing, Willa Gray?” Akins asked her eldest daughter, who responded, “We’re eating hot chocolate, so that’s good news!”
You don’t have to wait for snow to fall to indulge in a cozy beverage with your kiddos, though. Grab one of the gazillions of pumpkin-flavored drinks at coffeeshops nationwide, or warm up some apple cider to stay toasty.
Bake Sweet Treats
Those with a sweet tooth have to love the fall and all its trademark treats.
The NFL’s most famous football mom, Donna Kelce, baking is one of the main ways she spends time with granddaughter Wyatt, the daughter of Jason and Kylie Kelce. Donna told PEOPLE last December that Wyatt had become her “little helper” in the kitchen.
“I look forward to passing on my tips and tricks to the girls so that they can eventually pass these traditions on to their own families one day,” Donna added.
From apple muffins (Jennifer Garner, above, made hers with apples she picked in her yard) to Taylor Swift’s chai sugar cookies, the options for autumn-themed sweets are endless.
Grab a Karaoke Mic
Maybe you don’t have the vocals of Pink and her daughter Willow at the DNC, but it shouldn’t stop you and your kids from belting your favorite tunes. Whether through a karaoke machine or out loud in your living room, turn up the music and have a duet to your favorite autumn anthem. Or, let your child shine and show off their vocals on their favorite movie soundtrack (maybe something from the upcoming Moana sequel?).
Pick Apples in the Orchard
Peak apple season happens to align with the fall equinox. The orchards are brimming with fruit, ripe for the picking, so bring your family to the fields to enjoy the freshest apples. Last October, Emma Roberts shared a rare photo of her son Rhodes — whom she shares with actor Garrett Hedlund — placing an apple into a plastic bag emblazoned with his name.
“Fall 🍁 🍎 💙,” she captioned the photo of her son bundled up in a navy blue jacket.
According to Fine Dining Lovers, the ideal time to harvest apples is between September and late October, so fetch them at their crispest now.
Enjoy Nature on a Hike
The milder weather is made for a hike and a great way to get your family outdoors. Priyanka Chopra went for a hike with her daughter Malti, where they enjoyed “the magic of nature” earlier this year.
“She touched everything, jumped in puddles till she was muddy till her knees,” the actress captioned an Instagram post of the experience. “To witness her in real time experiencing everything for the first time.. is just her magic dust that she sprinkles in my life every day. ❤️😍🙏🏽.”
Scandal star and fellow mom Kerry Washington echoed the sentiment, commenting, “The world through their eyes is just so magical 🌟.”
Take Them Out to a Ball Game
Fall kicks off the major league seasons of sports like football, basketball and hockey. Sportier families can root for their favorite teams as they compete at the highest level. Khloé Kardashian brought her daughter True, whom she shares with basketball star Tristan Thompson, to her first football game last year. Wearing matching jerseys supporting their hometown team, the Los Angeles Rams, the mother-daughter duo posed for a photo in the stadium’s suite.
“We had such a great time at the Rams game!!!” Kardashian captioned the Instagram post. “True’s first football game and it couldn’t have been a better time!!!”
Learn How to Ice Skate
Ice skating rinks are opening their doors for this year’s fall season. It’s the perfect place to squeeze in some exercise and get some laughs while trying to stay upright. Ashlee Simpson brought her two sons, Bronx and Ziggy, to the ice skating rink during their ski trip last year. On her Instagram Stories, the singer posted photos of her and Bronx relearning how to skate, as well as Bronx helping out his little brother.
“Bronx and I trying to remember how to skate is always a good one,” she captioned one image. “We eventually got.”
Coordinate Your Costumes
With Halloween on the horizon, now is the time to start planning a costume theme for the family. Halloween 2023 saw parents like Kim Kardashian and Witney Carson go all-out to match with their kids. Kardashian and her daughter North complemented each other as Cher and Dionne from the ‘90s film Clueless. Meanwhile, the Dancing with the Stars alum and her husband Carson McAllister dressed up as Toy Story characters with their two sons, Jet and Leo.
For Keke Palmer’s first Halloween as a mom, she and her son Leo had an elaborate mother-son costume, with Palmer as the Bride of Frankenstein and Leo as scientist Henry Frankenstein.
“He gave me LIFE,” she cheekily captioned the Instagram post.
