8 celebrities and former athletes who attended the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony

The 2024 Paris Olympics officially began on Friday with a rainy (and a bit strange) opening ceremony along the River Seine in the center of Paris.

The parade certainly encapsulated many elements of French culture, including a reenactment of the beheading of Marie Antoinette (?) and even a ménage à trois (??). It was certainly a unique way to begin the 2024 Summer Olympics, and with the Games being held in one of the most prominent cities in the world, it’s no surprise that it was well attended by both celebrities and former Olympic stars alike.

Here’s a rundown of eight of the biggest stars who were in attendance for the start of the Paris Games.

Michael Phelps

It should be no surprise that the most decorated Olympian of all time made his way to Paris to attend the opening ceremony. Phelps won 23 gold medals and 28 medals overall while competing in five Olympics. He retired following the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Anna Wintour

An accomplished media executive, Wintour has been the editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1988.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo

The co-stars of the upcoming film adaptation of Wicked — set to release on Nov. 22 — were both in attendance together in Paris.

Two of the biggest names in Hollywood were spotted together in Paris on Friday. Zendaya stars in the Dune and Spider-Man franchises as well as 2024’s Challengers, while Lee has a distinguished and award-winning career. His film BlacKkKlansman won “Best Adapted Screenplay” in 2019.

Serena Williams

One of the greatest athletes of all time, Williams won 23 Grand Slam women’s singles titles — the most in the Open Era — and also found success in the Olympics, where she won four gold medals in her career spanning 2000-2012.

Flavor Flav

The world-famous rapper and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee has taken on a different role in the Paris Olympics: that of hype man and chief supporter of the U.S. women’s water polo team.

Lindsey Vonn

Another one of the greatest Olympic athletes of all time was in attendance in Vonn, a skiing star in the Winter Olympics who won a pair of World Championships and earned a gold medal in the downhill at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

Peyton Manning

Manning has no connection to the Olympics despite being one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, but he was on the call providing coverage during the opening ceremony on Friday.
