Celebrities endorsing Kamala Harris for president—”She’s ready”

After President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race, celebrities have thrown their support behind Vice President Kamala Harris.

The political landscape shifted dramatically on Sunday when Biden, citing a desire to pass the torch to a new generation of leadership, threw his full support behind Harris. Since June 27, after his poor performance in a CNN presidential debate against Donald Trump, the president has faced calls from Democrats to withdraw from the ticket. Biden sounded hoarse during the debate and appeared to stumble through several answers, doing little to quell concerns about his age.

Harris released a statement following Biden’s announcement, expressing her intention to earn and win the nomination. She pledged to unite the Democratic Party and the nation to defeat Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, and his agenda.

Now, various celebrities have taken to social media to share their support for Harris and encourage people to donate to the Democratic Party. Newsweek has contacted a spokesperson for Harris for comment via email outside normal working hours.

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato posted on Instagram twice on Sunday to show support for Harris. In one post, the singer reshared a statement from Biden alongside a photo of her and Harris, adding a donation link for the Democratic Party and writing, “Let’s do this.”

In another post, Lovato shared a photo of her and Harris laughing together.

Jamie Lee Curtis

Jamie Lee Curtis also took to Instagram to post a picture of Harris.

“I support wholeheartedly @joebiden and his decision to step down and to endorse unreservedly @kamalaharris,” the actor wrote in the caption. “SHE IS TRUSTED AND TESTED and she is a fierce advocate for women’s rights and people of color and her message is one of HOPE and UNITY for America at her time of great national divide.”

John Legend

John Legend took to Threads—a social networking service similar to X, formerly Twitter, that is integrated with Instagram—to share his support for Harris. The musician then shared a screenshot of the messages to his Instagram feed.

He wrote: “Joe Biden has presided over the most consequential first term of real progress in my lifetime. He helped us have the most robust recovery from the pandemic of any nation in the world, invested in our infrastructure and made by far the largest investment in fighting climate change our nation has ever seen. He relieved burdensome college debt for so many. Unemployment, inflation and crime are all down dramatically from the highs caused by the pandemic.

“With this record, he more than earned re-election, but time and age come for us all. I’m grateful for the grace and patriotism he has shown by choosing to step aside for the sake of the country. I’m so ready to work to help unite the pro-democracy coalition to reject Trump’s authoritarian, oppressive Project 2025 and elect Kamala Harris as our President. She’s ready for this fight and I’m excited to help her in any way I can.”

Kathy Griffin

Comedian Kathy Griffin posted on X: “Let’s make history!!!! Finally!!!”

Harris is the first person of color and the first woman to serve as vice president. If she wins November’s election, she would become the first woman to serve as president of the United States.

Mark Hamill

Star Wars actor Mark Hamill has been a staunch Biden supporter, and on Sunday, he thanked the president for his hard work. He also threw his support behind Harris, resharing Biden’s statement, which thanked Harris for “being an extraordinary partner in all this work.”

“@JoeBiden has a record of accomplishments unmatched by any president in our lifetime. He restored honesty, dignity & integrity to the office after 4 years of lies, crime, scandal & chaos. Thank you for your service, Mr. President. It’s now our duty as patriotic Americans to elect the Democrat who will honor & further your legacy. #VoteBlue2024ProtectDemocracy,” Hamill wrote on X.

Cardi B

On Sunday, rapper Cardi B reshared a June video of herself posted by the X account @updatesofcardi. In it, she said that while she wasn’t planning on voting, she believed it was selfish for the Democrats to allow Biden to run for a second term.

“This should have been the perfect time to give it to Kamala,” she said in the clip, adding, “It’s just a little selfish for the whole Democrat Party to not give her this moment because she might not ever get this moment again.”

“I’m telling you, they robbed you of your moment,” she continued. “You should have been there debating Trump.”

Cardi B captioned the reshared post, “AHAHAHAHA LETS GOOOOO I TOLD YALLL KAMALA WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE 2024 candidate.”

Robert De Niro

Robert De Niro, who has long been a critic of Trump, offered his “respect, admiration, and affection” to Biden for his decision.

“In an act of shrewd politics and selfless patriotism, Joe Biden is stepping aside to clear the path for another Democrat to become president,” the actor told The Hollywood Reporter, adding, “because there is nothing more important for our country than defeating Donald Trump at the ballot box. With respect, admiration, and affection, thank you Mr. President!”

George Takei

Star Trek actor George Takei posted on X: “I want to honor our President @JoeBiden. He has served our nation admirably for decades, he is a decent honorable man, a hugely successful president, and a patriot. Now let us unite behind @KamalaHarris and defeat Donald Trump in November!”

Elizabeth Warren

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren also took to X to share her support for Harris.

In a video she uploaded, Warren said she was endorsing Harris because she is “ready to step up, bring our party together, go toe to toe with Donald Trump and win in November.”

She added: “I have known Kamala Harris since back right after the 2008 crash, when she was attorney general in California and I was setting up the consumer agency. And we fought shoulder to shoulder to push back against the big banks that were cheating America’s homeowners. Kamala has been a ferocious warrior on the issue of abortion, and under Kamala’s leadership, we’re going to get Roe v. Wade back into law of the land.”

Warren captioned the video, “I endorse Vice President Kamala Harris.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez posted on X: “Kamala Harris will be the next President of the United States. I pledge my full support to ensure her victory in November. Now more than ever, it is crucial that our party and country swiftly unite to defeat Donald Trump and the threat to American democracy. Let’s get to work.”

Gavin Newsom

California Governor Gavin Newsom, long considered a potential 2028 presidential contender, quickly endorsed Harris, writing on social media that no one is better to prosecute the case against Trump than the former prosecutor and California attorney general.

“Tough. Fearless. Tenacious. With our democracy at stake and our future on the line, no one is better to prosecute the case against Donald Trump’s dark vision and guide our country in a healthier direction than America’s Vice President, @KamalaHarris,” he wrote on X.

Pete Buttigieg

Pete Buttigieg, the United States Secretary of Transportation, also took to X to show his support for Harris. In his statement, he said Biden is among the “best and consequential presidents in our history.”

He added that Harris is the best person to “take up the torch” and defeat Trump.

“I will do all that I can to help elect @KamalaHarris the next President of the United States,” he captioned the post.

Sheryl Lee Ralph

“January 2019 I made it clear what I thought about the future of Kamala Harris. Today, I still stand for @VP,” Sheryl Lee Ralph posted on X alongside a video of herself previously showing her support for Harris.

“I got nothing bad to say about her,” the actor and singer said in the clip. She added, “Long after everything happens, her success is good for all of us.”
