Celebrity basketball game in Louisville raises funds for mental health, suicide prevention

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Local celebrities hooped for a good cause on Saturday.

24 Reasons, a local nonprofit, held its inaugural “Be the Reason Celebrity Basketball Game” at Eastern High School. The event brought together celebrities, community leaders and supporters to raise awareness and funds for mental health and suicide prevention programs.

Some of the game’s participants included NBA star D’Angelo Russell, UFC fighter Terrance McKinney, country artist JD Shelburne and Louisville men’s basketball star Peyton Siva.

“I wanted to put on an event that brings together both my passions, which is basketball and mental health and try to put on an event for the community that just shows the importance of both,” said Trey Moses, founder of 24 Reasons. “Not only in my life but in the community and trying to bring everyone together.”

All proceeds from the game will go toward funding suicide awareness and prevention programs for young people.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 50,000 people died by suicide in the U.S. in 2021 — the equivalent of one death every 11 minutes.
