(WFSB) – The heat was certainly noticeable, but it didn’t stop the celebrities from coming out for the annual Pro-Am tournament.
Today was unique, and not just for the oppressive heat but the humanity and appreciation shown by those in attendance and also the love the competitors have for idols and each other.
A Moment of Silence was held for the loss of Willie Mays and Red Sox Great Tim Wakefield.
The “Say Hey Kid” was the idol of ESPN’s and Connecticut Native Chris Berman.
“I’m 69 and they are my favorite team in any sport. I thought it was the right thing to wear the hat because we are all sports fans, we are all Americans, and who is better than Willie Mays to make us smile,” Berman said.
Everyone at the Tournament who ever met Tim Wakefield loved him. He was a tireless worker for New England Charities, a great friend to the event, and the legendary BC Great Doug Flutie.
“Tim introduced me to this event, Tim and Chris, and we played many rounds together. Coming to this tournament was synonymous with seeing Tim and hanging out for the week. He was special. I never heard a bad word about him from anybody,” Flutie said.
The Pro-Am event is about connections between fans and celebrities. No one made a better first impression than actor Patrick Renna, from the 1993 Movie, the Sandlot.
The UConn banner was carried today by legendary Field Hockey Coach Nancy Stevens and former QB and current ESPNer Dan Orlovsky.
“I think you have to have a few butterflies to be able to hit a good ball. But this is a day for enjoyment and fan engagement,” Stevens said.
