It’s Earth Day! Here Are 10 Celebs Who Approach Their Style Sustainably

The Oscar winner has never been afraid to re-wear a red-carpet outfit. Just take this shiny blue draped top from Louis Vuitton, which Blanchett first wore to the 2023 Oscars—where she paired it with a long black skirt—before bringing it out again a year later at Paris Fashion Week. As her stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, says, “It’s chic to repeat,” And she’s even quoted Blanchett as saying, “Beautiful things can come out of sustainability!”

Jolie embraces many forms of activism, sustainability chief among them. And it’s clear she’s passed on this passion to her kids, as evidenced by the fact that her eldest daughter, Zahara, has worn a number of Jolie’s past red-carpet outfits for events. For instance, when the mom of six attended the Eternals red carpet with her family in 2021, her daughter wore the same glittering silver Elie Saab dress that Jolie wore to the 2014 Oscars.

Whether it’s album production or stage design, Eilish has been very active in trying to make her artistry eco-friendly, and that translates to her fashion as well. Throughout her career, she’s often collaborated with Gucci, and the look she wore for the 2022 Environmental Media Awards was a re-wear of a Gucci set she wore to the 2020 Billboard Awards. As a British royal, Princess Catherine could easily have all the clothes she wants, but she’s more dedicated to revamping the pieces she already loves. Need proof? Well her 2023 BAFTAs dress was a reworked Alexander McQueen gown that she wore to the same ceremony four years prior. To give the dress a fresh spin, the princess had the asymmetrical sleeve reimagined, and she added a pair of black opera gloves that gave the overall ensemble a dramatic two-tone touch.

Speaking of sustainable royals, Duchess Meghan is quite the climate-conscious dresser too. Remember when she wore the same sleeveless Martin Grant maxi dress to a youth leadership reception a year after she wore it for a royal tour? However, you can also see Meghan’s dedication in the brands she chooses, from DeMellier (a brand that uses leather that’s a byproduct of the food industry) to Everlane (which sources ethical materials and is transparent about its production processes).

Since day one, Fonda has been a vocal activist for what she believes in, advocating for everything from women’s rights to fighting Big Oil. In no major surprise, this translates to her red-carpet looks as well, where Fonda seems to keep the environment in mind. One of our favorite sustainable moments from the star was when she re-wore her 2014 Cannes Film Festival dress to the 92nd Academy Awards (switching things up with a new hairdo for the second time around).

One of the biggest champions of conscious dressing is Emma Watson, who has been pulling out vintage pieces since her Harry Potter days. Not to mention, the star is a supporter of Good on You, a site that grades retailers based on their environmental impact. “In truth, we can all play a part in driving fashion to be more sustainable and ethical,” Watson is quoted as saying on the Good on You site. “By choosing to wear clothes from labels that embrace transparent, creative, and innovative production methods; and by re-wearing, recycling, swapping, and thrifting. Together we are building a bigger, better movement every day.”

The Women Talking star has put her money where her mouth is when it comes to dressing sustainably, by founding her own clothing brand, Hiraeth Collective, which aims to match high-quality design with ethical production practices. “[Our] items are leather, fur, wool, and silk-free,” the label’s mission statement reads. “With alternative fabrics sourced from mills in Italy, France, Japan, and the U.K., each piece is carefully crafted in downtown Los Angeles.”

As someone who has been modeling for decades, Bündchen knows the ins and outs of the industry, and it seems she’s dedicated to keeping fashion as clean as possible. That’s why she’s re-worn a number of pieces, including this white Stella McCartney dress, which she first donned for the Hollywood for Science Gala in 2019. Better still, Bündchen also auctioned off the dress that night for $48,000, to help raise funds for reforestation efforts in her native Brazil.

The Ahsoka star has plenty of film credits to her name and plenty of environmental efforts on her résumé, too. For starters, she cofounded Studio One Eighty Nine with Abrima Erwiah; the brand produces African-inspired clothing through traditional methods and won the CFDA Lexus Fashion Initiative for Sustainability award. Dawson also started Voto Latino, which encourages civic engagement in Latinx communities and centers on environmental impact. “My very first campaign was to save trees when I was 10 years old,” she told Elle in 2020. “I made a bunch of posters because I wasn’t thinking about it so clearly.” Now, Dawson certainly thinks about every small impact she makes.
