Property mogul Barbara, 75, was one of the first to poke fun at the situation.

She took to Instagram to share a clip of herself standing in a bathtub with coffee cup in hand as she comedically swayed from side-to-side.

Overlaid text read ‘everyone in NYC right now’ before she added a backing track of Carole King’s I Feel The Earth Move.

Elsewhere, ex-CNN anchor Don Lemon, who is due to marry longtime partner Tim Malone in Manhattan at the weekend, took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to write: ‘Totally just had an earthquake in New York. Did you feel it?’

This was echoed by actress Busy Phillips who also noted the shake, adding: ‘Like guys. I think there was an earthquake in NYC.’

Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain commented: ‘Did we just have an earthquake?! NYC.’

She then shared a later tweet that read: ‘This is really nuts. Hope everyone is ok and that our buildings weren’t damaged.’

Media personality Megyn Kelly posted that she had felt the tremor in Connecticut, asking: ‘Did we just have an earthquake? (In CT).’

American commentator Chris Hayes added: ‘Uh that was an earthquake in NYC????’

Cara Buono, who played Karen Wheeler in Stranger Things, also laid bare her unique experience of the earthquake.

‘Haven’t been here in a while but: what are the chances of being in an earthquake in the middle of a mammogram in NYC,’ she wrote.

‘The lovely tech and I had quite a laugh (when it was over). Even when there’s an earthquake it’s important to have your mammogram! #earthquake #nyc #mammogram.’

Experts had previously warned that NYC was long overdue for a quake.

The city of 8.5 million people is not thought of as a tremor hot spot, but the five boroughs are riddled with fault lines that could bring dozens of buildings down.

The epicenter of the quake was near Readington in Hunterdon County in NJ, per governor Phil Murphy.

The FAA has ordered ground stops from John F Kennedy and Newark International airports.

People in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Connecticut and other areas of the Northeast reported shaking. Tremors lasting for several seconds were felt over 200 miles away near the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border.

President Biden has been briefed on the incident, per the White House.

New York last experienced a significant earthquake in 1884.
