What is frontotemporal dementia?

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by progressive damage to nerve cells in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. These regions are responsible for personality, behavior, language, and decision-making, essentially making a person “a person”.

FTD typically affects individuals under the age of 65, often striking in their 40s and 50s, making it one of the most common forms of dementia in younger adults and symptoms include changes in behavior, personality, and language difficulties but vary from each sufferer.

Behavioral changes may manifest as apathy, disinhibition, social withdrawal, or repetitive behaviors. Language difficulties can range from difficulty finding words to complete loss of speech. Memory loss, a hallmark symptom of other dementias like Alzheimer’s disease, is less prominent in FTD.

There is currently no cure for FTD, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms and providing support to patients and their families through therapy and medication. Early diagnosis is crucial for managing the condition and planning for the future.
