These days, Super Bowl commercials featuring Hollywood A-listers and breakout stars in the music world are a huge trend.
But unlike the musical icons who grace the halftime stage and aren’t paid a dime, that’s not the case for the household names who appear in your favorite Super Bowl ads.
For Super Bowl LVIII, some of the ads that featured huge stars included Martin Scorsese in a commercial for Squarespace, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito teaming up for a State Farm commercial, and a fan favorite – Ben Afflick, Tom Brady, Matt Damon, Jennifer Lopez, Fat Joe and Jack Harlow in the Dunkin’ ad that took the tracksuit world by storm.
Have you ever wondered what a check typically looks like for the big steppers in these commercials?
The answer is no small amount.
The truth is the Hollywood giants can make anywhere between $10 to $15 million for a spot in a commercial. It’s an eye-popping salary for only a few days of work.
Even though the $10 million deals are on the steep side, multiple brand management executives told CNN it’s rare for a big celebrity to have a spot during the Super Bowl for less than $1 million.
“It can be as little as $25,000 for someone to do a cameo that’s not a megastar, but as high as $10 million. It depends on the brand and it depends on the stature of the celebrity,” Tim Curtis, a partner in the brand partnerships division at the Hollywood talent agency, WME, said to CNN. “The majority of bigger stars are usually in that $1 to $3 million range for Super Bowl, but there are exceptions that go out north of that. It’s rare for someone that you think of as a true movie star to be paid less than a million.”
Curtis added that most shoots for the Super Bowl are usually one to two days.
Let’s not forget the fact that CBS charges $7 million for a 30-second spot, so a company can end up spending a wealth of money to air a commercial during the Super Bowl.
So, the more huge names involved in a brand’s commercial for the Super Bowl, the more money the brand has to shell out for each celebrity.
And there’s also the fact that there’s a lot of money involved to air a commercial once, Looper reported.
This year, at least two major Hollywood stars cashed in more than $5 million for their star power in ads and they were only seen on-camera for less than 20 seconds, according to what sources told CNN.
“To bring content to the biggest stage and biggest platform out there, you need to have breakthrough power of what a celebrity can bring,” T-Mobile chief creative officer, Peter DeLuca, told CNN. “When you invest in a celebrity, you are investing in who they are and the work that they’ve done. They bring a lot of brand credibility – and when I say ‘brand,’ I’m referring to their brand.”
It’s a gig anyone would wish to have.
