Bob Odenkirk recently learned he has a cousin in Buckingham Palace. On the Jan. 30 episode of PBS’ “Finding Your Roots,” host Henry Louis Gates Jr. told the Emmy-nominated actor his fifth great-grandfather was related to a famous monarchy in Europe.
“[It makes me feel] like a part of history that I didn’t think I was any part of,” the “Better Call Saul” star replied before he was told exactly who his royal cousin is.
“I’m an American. I’m not a monarchist. I don’t believe in that. You know, I feel like it’s a little twisted. … I understand why society built itself around monarchs and leaders, and they passed them down through generations. … But I think that we’ve gotten to a better place with democracy and we should keep going down that road,” he added.

Bob Odenkirk’s cousin is none other than Britain’s King Charles III, the star learned after he’d dissed Europe’s royals.
Laughing, he told “Finding Your Roots” host Henry Louis Gates Jr., “Well maybe I’ll change my mind [about the monarchy]. Oh, that is crazy. I never even thought about that!”
According to the show’s research, Bob and Charles are 11th cousins. Their connection comes via Bob’s fifth great-grandfather, Friedrich Carl Steinholz, who was the son of Germany’s Duke of Plön. The duke was related to Europe’s royal families through intermarriage and conceived Friedrich out of wedlock.
