Abigail Spencer credits Meghan Markle’s charm as one of the factors in the historic resurgence of “Suits.”
The 42-year-old actress appeared Friday on SiriusXM’s “The Jess Cagle Show” where she shared her “layered” opinions as to why the legal drama is captivating new audiences four years after it ended.
“I think there’s several different things. And also Meghan’s loveliness, you know, that everyone is aware of her and her being on the show,” she gushed about the estranged Duchess of Sussex, also 42.
“Suits” ran for nine seasons — from 2011 to 2019 — on the USA Network, but Markle departed in 2018 after getting engaged to Prince Harry.
But in June, Netflix added the show to the streamer, reaching record-breaking viewership numbers.
Spencer noted that the royals’ 2022 docuseries “Harry & Meghan” also being on Netflix may have helped bump “Suits” up in the algorithm.
“Also during the strike, there wasn’t anything else,” she referenced the writers and actors strikes. “You know, Netflix repositioned it, so I think there is something to positioning on Netflix and when other things aren’t being made, it commands your attention, but it has to be great for people to watch it.”
Back in November, Markle also addressed the renewed interest in the show, telling Variety that is was “great to work on.”
“Such a great cast and crew, we had a really fun time,” she said at the outlet’s Power of Women event.
She said the streaming numbers were “wild” but credited the show for how well it held up over time.
“It’s hard to find a show you can binge-watch that many episodes of these days, so that could have something to do with it,” she said. “But good shows are everlasting.”
However, Markle did not join her “Suits” co-stars for the show’s reunion at the 2024 Golden Globes. Her former co-star Gina Torres reveled the cast has a group text chat — but Markle is not in it.
“We don’t have her number. We just don’t,” Torres said on the red carpet.
Their fellow co-star Patrick Adams also revealed whether he thinks Markle would ever return to acting for a “Suits” spinoff.
“Sure. Mike and Rachel in Seattle. They gotta come down to LA, they gotta fix some stuff,” he said of his and Markle’s character.
“She’s pretty popular right now,” he jokingly continued. “Did you hear about Meghan? I’ll tell you later.”
