In a historic breakthrough for Indigenous representation in Hollywood, Lily Gladstone has become the first Indigenous actor to win the prestigious Golden Globe Awards. She received this award for her outstanding performance in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, where she starred alongside renowned actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. Gladstone’s work in the Western crime drama film garnered widespread acclaim, with many considering her one of its standout performers.
Following her win at the 81st Golden Globe Awards ceremony, Mark Ruffalo took to Twitter to congratulate the actress, which did not sit well with some Twitter users, who came out to troll The Avengers star on the social media platform.

Lily Gladstone Becomes the First Indigenous Actor to Win a Golden Globe Award
Lily Gladstone secured her place in history by becoming the first Indigenous actor to win a Golden Globe. She was awarded with the Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama for the 2023 Western crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon.
Gladstone of Blackfeet/Nimíipuu heritage acknowledged the scarcity of Indigenous actors in lead roles. The significance of her win was underscored by her acceptance speech, delivered partially in the Blackfeet language. “This is a historic one, and it doesn’t belong to just me,” the actress said as she shared the honor with her fellow actors in the film.
The win is considered particularly noteworthy, given the lack of recognition for Indigenous actors by prestigious awards. Some of the recognized Indigenous names include Irene Bedard, who has been the sole nominee for best actress in a miniseries or TV movie, and Taika Waititi, who has been acknowledged for his directorial work.
Killers of the Flower Moon featured Gladstone as Mollie Burkhart, a real-life Osage woman entangled in the systematic murders of Osage people in the 1920s. The movie showcased her versatility and command over both the Osage and English languages.
Mark Ruffalo Trolled for Congratulating Lily Gladstone
Celebrating the historical landmark in Hollywood and the industry’s efforts towards indigenous recognition, the Oscar-nominated actor Mark Ruffalo took to Twitter to congratulate Lily Gladstone for her win. “Congratulations, @lily_gladstone! Well deserved!” he said in his tweet.
However, his best wishes for the First Cow actress did not sit well with some specific users on the platform and they started trolling the Poor Things star for his congratulatory wishes. Some users came up with remarks like, “Loser celebrities patting themselves on the back.”
