- More recently, Sydney Sweeney stepped out in a crystal-covered dress with a sheer skirt.
See-through fashion is less of a trend and more of a lifestyle. Celebrities always have and likely always will go bold when they can.
But this year, dresses with mesh skirts and lace bodices really took over — making 2023 the year of sheer.
From Sydney Sweeney to Karol G, here’s a look at some of the best looks celebrities wore that showed some skin.
Beyoncé kicked off 2023 in a golden gown and see-through tights.
Her strapless dress designed by Dolce & Gabbana was covered in gold sequins. It had a triangle-shaped plunge across its bodice and two tall slits in its skirt, the latter of which revealed her sheer, sparkling tights.
Beyoncé wore the gown with a gold, foil-like shawl that extended into a long train on the floor.
In February, Anne Hathaway put a feminine twist on black leather.
Her “naked” Valentino dress was sleeveless, entirely sheer, and made from a polka-dot print mesh.
On top of the see-through layer was an overlay of leather bows, which perfectly matched Hathaway’s over-the-elbow gloves and pointed pumps.
The dress is one of the best looks Hathaway wore in 2023.
Suki Waterhouse embraced her “Daisy Jones & The Six” character for the show’s premiere.
She wore a ’70s style, sheer kaftan in a vibrant green shade that was designed by Stéphane Rolland.
The dress had flowing fabric that reached the floor, a scooped neckline that dipped to her stomach, and a row of beads encrusted across its bodice.
Rihanna showed the power of sheer maternity fashion in March.
For the Academy Awards, Rihanna arrived on the red carpet wearing a brown ensemble from Alaïa. It featured a high-neck, long-sleeve top made from mesh, a leather bralette, and a mermaid-style skirt with hip slits and a long train.
Rihanna wore the look with only red lipstick, a messy bun, and dangling earrings.
Jodie Turner-Smith proved that sheer fashion can feature bold prints at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party.
Gucci designed her dark dress, which had a mesh bodice, harlequin-print sleeves, a bodice crafted from satin and crystals, and a floor-length skirt that matched its top.
Though the dress sparkled on its own, Turner-Smith added glimmering red lipstick for good measure.
Kendall Jenner wore a dress that was equally vibrant and sheer in April.
While out in New York City, she was photographed wearing a sleeveless, high-neck gown that was entirely see-through across its bodice.
Its skirt was more conservative, but still bold thanks to its thick feather design.
Halle Bailey stood out at the Met Gala in May with a white gown crafted from lace.
Rodarte designed her white halter dress, which was see-through and showed her skin on the red carpet.
But to make the look more glamorous, she also carried a ruffled shawl across her arms that extended into a train behind her.
Dakota Johnson embraced the visible lingerie trend that month at a Gucci fashion show.
Her outfit from the designer included a lace, crystal-embellished slip that showed her black underwear, and a leather trench coat that made the outfit a bit more modest.
Johnson accessorized the look with a small purse, pointed pumps, and diamond necklaces.
Eva Longoria opted for white lace at the Cannes Film Festival.
Aside from a tan panel that lined the gown’s bodice, Longoria’s Elie Saab dress was entirely see-through.
Its sheer fabric was decorated with sparkling crystals in swirling patterns, and its top was cut to be backless and revealing at the hips.
Karol G kept things pastel on the VMAs red carpet in September.
To match her baby-pink hair, the musician sported a gauzy, off-white gown that was sheer and showed her matching underwear.
Karol G also donned a floor-length jacket, which she kept loosely draped below her shoulders.
In November, Margot Robbie wore a gown made from two different fabrics — one of which was sheer.
The brown Schiaparelli number had both a see-through, satin corset and a velvet skirt structured to look like it was worn unbuttoned.
The dress, which she wore with a gold necklace, was a departure from the more whimsical looks she sported to promote “Barbie.”
Addison Rae sported a black lace gown at the Academy Museum Gala in December.
The Roberto Cavalli gown had a plunging neckline with crisscross straps, an open back, and a see-through skirt that showed her black underwear.
The sensual gown is one of the most daring looks Rae has ever worn.
Sydney Sweeney promoted her movie “Anyone But You” in a glamorous gown with a daring touch.
Miu Miu designed her sleeveless dress, which was covered in crystals from top to bottom and sheer across its tight-fitting skirt.
The dress also had a black belt fastened under her chest, which matched the black coat Sweeney wore when she left the movie premiere.
