Henry Kissinger, once called ‘Washington’s greatest swinger,’ dated…

Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger who died at 100 on Wednesday leaves behind a legacy that includes a Nobel Peace Prize and a lasting impact on US foreign policy — but the diplomat was also known to be quite the ladies’ man in his younger days on Capitol Hill.

Kissinger was married twice after divorcing his first wife in 1964 but before he tied the knot with his now-widow Nancy, 89, he courted several celebrities and successful women — earning him the title of “Washington’s greatest swinger,” according to a WWD article from 1971.

“…When it comes to discussing his life as ‘Playboy of the Western Wing,’ [Kissinger] lights up,” the piece written off an interview with the then-White House staffer states. “It is a subject that has great appeal to him.”

Kissinger romanced quite a few well-known ladies before settling down. During his bachelor days, he had been seen with the likes of Candice Bergen, Shirley MacLaine, Jill St. John, Marlo Thomas, Liv Ullman and Samantha Eggar, as well as Diane Sawyer, then a White House staffer, according to Reuters.

Those close to the diplomat, however, said the playboy persona Kissinger had was mostly concocted by the media, the outlet reported.

Still, in a 1972 poll of Playboll Club Bunnies, Kissinger came out on top as the bunnies’ choice for “the man I would most like to go out on a date with,” according to the Associated Press.

In the WWD interview — in which Kissinger asks the journalist Kandy Stroud if she was trying to “seduce” him, noting that he liked her HotPants “very much” — the Nixon cabinet member reveled in his bachelor image.

“In fact if you ask Henry how he likes being called ‘Washington’s greatest swinger,’ he replies unabashedly, ‘That’s no compliment. That’s faint praise’,” Stroud wrote.

Kissinger was rumored to be dating — and even secretly married to — Bond girl Jill St. John at the time of the interview. Both denied the rumors, with St. John telling WWD that what they had was a “great friendship” and was never and would never be a “great romance.”

The “sex symbol of the Nixon Administration,” as described by Stroud, eventually married Manhattan-born philanthropist and Rockefeller staffer Nancy Maginnes in 1974. The pair met when Kissinger was a professor at Harvard, where Magginnes was a student.
