Robbie Williams reveals the reason for his break-up with Spice Girl Geri Halliwell

It was the start of the new millennium and many things were in vogue in the music world.

The Spice Girls were dominating the music world after their peerless ‘Wannabe’ became the song of the year and made the group one of the most successful of the fan phenomenon.

But while the girl quartet was riding high, it was Take That who dominated the music market from a male perspective.

One of them split from the group in 1996 to pursue a solo career, and with his music, scandals and stage shows, he made it big. Robbie Williams achieved more success as a solo artist than with the group.

Netflix and the Robbie Williams series

It wasn’t unheard of, but with the release on November 8 of the ‘Robbie Williams‘ series on Netflix, which details the “Rock DJ” singer’s 25-year solo career, he reminisces about times gone by and reflects on a lifetime in the spotlight.

In the series, Williams recounts the details of the “magical” relationship he had with a Spice Girl.

“I’ve never been happier,” the artist confesses, but in the documentary he reveals why he was forced to leave her.

After three months in the relationship, he took the step to break up the couple, all because of sordid rumours about his partner, which drove him mad and spelt the beginning of the end.

Robbie Williams and Geri Halliwell met at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings at a time when both were in fragile mental health.

As if the alcohol problem wasn’t enough, they both had problems with food, as she struggled with bulimia while he struggled with anorexia.

In the summer of 2000, during a holiday in the south of France, Robbie was forced to end the relationship due to a realisation that came to him.

“We got on really well, it was fun and we were a small group sharing a magical moment, in a magical place,” he says in the Netflix documentary. “Now I don’t believe it’s true for a second, but at the time I believed it.”
